Adult Education, Culture of Peace and Educational Partnership : The Experience of the National Association for Adult Literacy and Education (ANAFA) in Senegal

Let us start with three Wolof proverbs which emphasise the importance of communicating and raising questions on different modalities for pedagogical and andragogical action. The first one states “Ku xamul buur saay na, nga wax buur dee na.” This version is the least harsh and could be translated in the following manner: “If someone does not understand, when you tell him that the king has lived, you must tell him that he has died.” The second proverb states “Ku bañ ku la nax, ku la noxx nga begg.” This version is harsher since it involves a play on the words “nax” and “noxx.” It translates to “If you are insensitive to allegorical language, you shouldn’t complain if the other speaker uses the stronger type.” Finally, a third proverb states “ñàkk déggóo amul, ñàkk waxtaan moo am”, which translates to “It is always possible to get along as long as preference is given to the path of dialogue.”
