Expressing one's thoughts takes on particular importance in the civic learning process. If we admit that schools must serve as a crutch in order for a democratic society to emerge, it is clear that in addition to educating, it is only natural that they teach our children the art of socialisation. This learning process occurs through participating in the micro-society that is school, which becomes a stimulating setting that encourages pupils to take initiative whereby each individual can develop his/her creativity and cultivate a critical mind. Training pupils to be active and responsible citizens who are aware of their belonging to a “human community” is a long process throughout which several aspects come into play. They include the role and power accorded to self-expression of pupils who must be able to use such expression in groups with a view to developing a collective thought-process. In order for such a demanding undertaking to become a learning goal, it must first assume one meaning for all.
