A Trial Analysis of Coexisting at Secondary School, by Véronique Truchot
The experience of self-expression takes on particular importance when learning to become a citizen. If it can be agreed upon that schools must function as a springboard in order for a democratic society to emerge, it is also clear that, in addition to their teaching mission, schools are naturally responsible for teaching social skills. This learning process is carried out through participation in what is a micro-society, which becomes a real-life scenario that pushes pupils to take initiative so that each individual may develop their creativity and cultivate a critical mind. Training citizens, especially active, responsible citizens, who are aware of their belonging to a “human community” is a long process throughout which several factors come into play. Among these are the place and influence accorded to the self-expression of pupils who must use this ability collectively with a view to developing a collective discussion. In order for this demanding undertaking to become a part of the learning process, it must take on meaning for everyone.
