The Right to Education : A Reflection from the Perspective of the Critical Paradigm and Human Rights Education, by Abraham Magendzo

Summary

It is necessary to address the issue of the right to education through a critical paradigm allowing us to evaluate social problems and the role of the individual as a subject of law. From a political and ethical point of view, we ask that education address challenges related to poverty, social conditions of inequality, violence, impunity, corruption and intolerance. In this article, we will attempt to define precisely what is meant by being a subject of law and to show which type of pedagogy is best suited to exercising rights from the perspective of education and the content of curricula. In the same light, we present the teacher as a person concerned with promoting the development of a critical mind as well as the ability to contribute change within the pupil. In this way, the right to education is closely tied to a desire for emancipation on the subject’s behalf.
