Teaching Rules at School and the Right to Education, by Véronique Truchot

Summary

The new educational policies of western countries seems to manifest strong interest for civic education for youth. It involves a discourse enamelled with injunctions that highlight the importance of strengthening the social link and learning to live with others. Furthermore, this educational programme is based on building democratic rules and obeying them within the very walls of schools. But what exactly does this lead to in the daily operations of school life? What do pupils think about this? What conditions must be met before school life is endowed with a sincere intention to democratise the socio-educational link? In an attempt to clarify all this, the following text lays out the main points of research on the conception held by Québécois teenagers on the enforcement of rules in secondary schools.
