Report of the 1st International Meeting of Experts on human rights education
Geneva, from 4 to 7 December 2006
Theme
The new Council of Human Rights and the issues of human rights education
Outcomes
As a result of this 3 days-seminar, participants agreed to formulate a proposal that includes the following:
Request to include reference to NGOs, research centres and Universities as partners in the work on HRE in the HRCouncil;
Updated document gathering the legal basis on HRE (including general dispositions in international law, decisions and recommendations for the promotion of HRE, guidelines, etc.);
A call to ensure availability of financial resources for HRE;
A position paper to be presented at the 4th session of the HR Council which summarizes the issues raised at this seminar of experts. The objective is to make the most of this new HR mechanism in order to lobby the national governmental bodies and force them to adopt the legal basis.
As follow-up to this seminar, it was suggested that participants will provide CIFEDHOP with written ideas on the issues discussed and will keep regular contact via email. Yves Lador also suggested reflecting on the priorities on HRE that should be examined in the UPR.
Once drafted, the position paper will be circulated among the participants at the seminar for their feedback and additional comments before its submission to the HRCouncil.
